Audio sync
Using Bluetooth headphones or a speaker? They play late, which makes every step look late. Sync once for each pair: march on the spot, one step per click.
Motion sync
Stand still for 3s so the app learns how much your camera wobbles. It runs by itself when you turn the camera on. Redo it if you move the camera.
How high a foot must lift to count as a step, as a share of your leg length. Raise it if you get extra steps, lower it if steps are missed.
For developers
- Prop your phone or laptop 2.5–3m away, low down and tilted up.
- Your whole body, head to feet, must be in frame.
- Make sure you are well lit and the volume is up.
- Tap the camera button once. After that you don't need to touch the screen.
- First time on this device? Raise both hands and choose Full sync before your first session.
Control the app from across the room without touching the screen.
Open it
- Stand where the camera can see your head and both hands.
- Raise both hands above your head and keep them there. A 2, 1 countdown shows, then the main menu opens.
Press a button
- Your wrists show as yellow rings on the screen.
- Move a ring over a button and hold it still for 1.5s. The button fills up green, then presses.
- To press the same button again, move your hand off and back on. The − and + for music, tempo and length keep going once a second while your hand stays there.
- A greyed-out button can't go any further.
Main menu
- ▶ Start: starts a session with the music, tempo and length written on the button.
- 🎵 Change: use − and + to change the music (you hear a bit of each), tempo and length.
- 👣 Step check: step on the spot to test that your steps are being counted.
- ⚙ Settings: Delay, Lift needed, Audio sync and Motion sync.
- 🔄 Full sync: Motion sync, then Audio sync. Do this first on a new device. It has a yellow border until you have.
- ✕ Close. ← Back on any page returns to the main menu.
Close or stop
- It closes by itself after 20s with no hand on a button.
- During a session or step check, raise both hands for 2s to stop it.
- Motion sync: stand still for 3s (only the first time after the camera turns on).
- 3, 2, 1, then "5, 6, 7, 8" counts you in.
- Practice: two basics, starting on the green 1.
- A higher "5, 6, 7, 8" means recording starts on the next 1.
- Tempo: are your basics the speed of the music?
- Pause length: do you hold for 2 beats on the 4 and the 8?
- Timing: does your basic start on the 1?
- On the beat: does each step land with the beat?
Tap See full analysis for every basic and step. History keeps every session on this device.
- Steps missed or "Couldn't measure": make sure you are well lit, keep your feet in frame, redo the motion sync.
- Every step late: run Audio sync in Settings.
- A foot goes missing: film from slightly to one side so your feet don't overlap.
- Hands-up GUI won't open: step back until your head and both hands are in frame.
How to dance the basic step
Salsa music counts in eights. Over 8 counts you take 6 small steps and pause twice. This is the forward and back basic, starting on the 1 ("On1"), which is what Step Up! checks.
The top of each box is the way you face. Blue is your left foot and red is your right. The filled foot is the one your weight goes onto.
- Step forward with your left foot.
- Rock your weight back onto your right foot. It stays where it is.
- Step your left foot back, next to your right.
- Pause.
- Step back with your right foot.
- Rock your weight forward onto your left foot. It stays where it is.
- Step your right foot back, next to your left.
- Pause.
Tips
- Keep your steps small, about half the length of your foot.
- Step on the balls of your feet and keep your knees soft.
- Hold still on 4 and 8. Pause length in your results checks this.
- Dancing with a partner? One of you does the mirror image: right foot back on 1, left foot forward on 5.
Salsa grew out of Cuban son and took its name in New York in the 1960s and 70s. The clave plays the pattern the band locks to and the cowbell marks the beat. The Salsa band music has both.
